Athlete of the MonthApril

Nikki Mihalcin

How old / young are you? I am 33 years old. What is your occupation? Real estate investor When did you join Widespread Fitness? I joined group classes 4 years ago. After a short break, I started personal training with Kari. Why did you decide to give Widespread Fitness a try?  I could see my husband, Matt, enjoyed the workouts at Widespread Fitness. Also, the gym was a 1 minute, 15 second drive from our house so it haunted me everyday as I drove past. What was your athletic background before starting? I don’t have much of an athletic background…I was more into music growing up. I joined the swim team when I was young but almost always came in last place. Also, my parents have video of my soccer games as I would stand with my hands in my pockets as the ball passed me by. But to redeem myself, I usually run the Bolder Boulder every year and I’ve climbed 24 Colorado 14ers. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting? I have seen muscles form! And when Matt and I worked on nutrition with Kari we definitely noticed a difference in our physic overall. I would absolutely recommend working with Kari on nutrition if that is something you struggle with. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting out? Just do it. It is actually a lot of fun. Also, don’t look at the workouts when your snug in your bed on a cold winter morning at 5am. Just show up. Your mind and body will thank you. What is your favorite and least favorite exercises / movement? How do I put this into words?….. Burpees are the DEVIL. The worst thing ever invented. They try to kill you. And then sled pushes were invented. And they try to kill you faster. I enjoy almost any other movement. Compared to burpees and sled pushes, anything else is glorious! What is your most memorable moment so far? During one of the Crossfit Opens, it was fun to see the Donnelly brothers compete against each other at Bar Muscle-ups. Another memorable moment was one of my first group classes, in which the second half of the workout was straight burpees. Coach Matt was trying to encourage me as I tried not to throw up in the summer heat. The rest of the class, already finished, looked on. But everyone was very encouraging! What do you like to do outside of the gym? Outside of Crossfit I love to travel and hang out with family. I have two daughters under the age of two and they keep me busy! I also enjoy working and seeing how I can grow and improve my business. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? My husband and I acknowledge that for a while we enjoyed one of the Big Bad Three (Pizza, Chinese food or Red Robin). But no longer! If I had to cheat, it would be one of these three. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I didn’t like chocolate as a child. I have since come around. Also, I am one of six sisters and work with three of them. Who or what inspires you the most? Anyone who is creating. Creating a better life for themselves, creating a business, creating an awesome family unit. Creating what people told them may be impossible. What is one goal you would like to accomplish? I would like to be an overall healthier person, seeing defined muscle and eating healthier without even thinking about it.
