Athlete of the MonthSeptember

Clint Smith

How old / young are you?
43.

What is your occupation?
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Anesthesia. I put people to sleep for surgery and other procedures requiring anesthesia. And of course wake them up…..most of the time. My full time job is at Denver Health as well as I do some additional obstetric anesthesia at Rose Medical Center and occasionally Skyridge Medical Center.

When did you join Widespread CrossFit?
I am proud to say that I am one of Matt and Kari’s first victims when they opened the box.

Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try?
I was excited when I noticed the box opening in this location. (Please don’t move!) It is very convenient for me. I had wanted to try CrossFit for some time but hadn’t gotten up the nerve to actually go into a box. I had been coming close to it though! Once I saw Widespread opening so close to home I no longer had an excuse not to give it a go.

What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit?
I have pretty much always belonged to a gym and have tried a little of most everything at them. In my younger days I played school football and as a kid played soccer, baseball and basketball. Never really excelled at any of them (but didn’t totally suck either). Ten years or so before starting CrossFit I did a few triathlons as well.

What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since
starting CrossFit?

I wish that I could say that I was posing for CrossFit posters but sadly not yet. I have lost a fair amount of weight since starting and I can’t lie, I struggle to keep it off and still a work in progress. I definitely have more energy and strength and find that I am able to do the activities that I enjoy. What I really notice is when I slack off on coming to the box and/or slip on my diet/partaking in libations.

What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
I would highly recommend it to anyone. Especially if you do better in a group and/or scheduled
setting like I do. I really like how it is an individual sport in a group setting. I would also
recommend listening to the coaches and really scale as needed and work up to more
intensity. Put it on your calendar and stick with it. Oh, and never look at the WOD
ahead of time!

What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement?
Least favorite is a toss up between wall balls and burpees. Even worse, when they are lumped together in a WOD. My favorite is probably cleans and clean and jerks. Really what I like is
variety and not doing the same thing every day.

What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far?
I would probably have to say competing in the Festivus Games. I was pretty nervous but it was a pretty cool experience. All of the in-house competitions have been really cool and doing the Leadville Heavy Half and the Spartan race with some of the fine people from the box have been really cool experiences too!

What do you like to do outside of CrossFit?
I enjoy spending time with my family; my wife Kim, daughter Fiona and son Beckett. We love to travel, boating, wakeboarding, snow skiing and just hanging out at home.

What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal?
Where do I begin? If I had to pick just one it would probably be lasagna. And of course a nice bottle of wine paired with it.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I struggle with this question the most. I cant’ think of any really exciting or interesting things. Many of the folks at the gym already know this but I completed a half ironman (actually 72.3 miles instead of just 70.3) last summer in Bend, Oregon. It was an amazing experience and I never could have done it without the fitness obtained from coming to Widespread.

Who or what inspires you the most?
My family first and foremost. Secondly all of the other athletes who encourage me and cheer me on as I finish the WODs each and every time here at Widespread. I also enjoy hearing and seeing stories of others who have accomplished amazing physical goals through CrossFit.

What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
Other than being half naked on a poster my maybe unrealistic goal would be to complete a full Ironman. Gotta have goals right?
