Athlete of the MonthSeptember

Jim Smith

How old / young are you?

When did you join Widespread CrossFit?
Just over a year ago when I returned from a year in Virginia.

Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try?
I had watched CrossFit for a long time, but my travel schedule never allowed me to focus on any regular commitment so I kept delaying getting started.  The variety of movements and athletic nature of it really appealed to me.

What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit?
I’ve always been active since I was young – played sports throughout high school and have stayed active doing something most of my life.

What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Overall general improvement in strength and endurance – really just trying to stay in shape.

What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Probably a few things we hear all the time – check your ego at the door, listen to the coaches, focus on your form and don’t worry about competing with anyone else, and most importantly have fun!

What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement?
Right now – anything with a mask is a least favorite.  Setting that aside, I love thrusters because it hits so many muscle groups, and least favorite would have to be sled pushes.

What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far?
Finally being able to do double unders!

What do you like to do outside of CrossFit?
Skiing, hiking, shooting, and hunting would have to be at the top of the list.

What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal?
M&M’s – really need to kick that habit!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
My family and I have lived in 7 different states (coast to coast, north and south) and have moved back to CO 4 times.

Who or what inspires you the most?
My family is what drives me forward – always trying to be there and support them however I can.

What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
Simple – maintain a level of fitness/health that allows me to take on whatever activity I want to in life.
