Athlete of the MonthJuly
How old / young are you? 44 What is your occupation? Sales When did you join Widespread CrossFit? June of 2015 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I have a work associate that I would see once or twice a year that always reminded me of a chubby Phil Michelson. One day he showed up at my office and I had to take a step back because he looked five to ten years younger and was jacked. I asked him what the heck he was doing and he replied, “CrossFit man”. That’s all it took. Well…that and my 8 year old son wants me to take him to Water World. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? I am all aboUt the hockey. I played AAA travel in Michigan when I was a kid and now I coach four days a week September through March and play beer league with my buddies. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? Although I actually weigh the same today as when I started a year ago, I must admit that I have gotten much stronger and I don’t really get sick anymore (colds and what not). I feel like I am at the tipping point in a good way. Three to six more months of consistent effort and I might be able to come in 2nd to last place in the aerobic driven WODs. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Put the remote down and DO IT! I have never been to another CrossFit gym for comparison but Matt and Kari have been awesome. They motivate you everyday but in a way that keeps you accountable for yourself without making you feel like you need to be Rich Froning. All the other athletes are super supportive and although I dread the first 5 minutes, I always leave feeling awesome! What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? My favorite is back squats and deadlifts. My least favorite is wall walks, burpees, running, overhead squats, any WOD with a soldiers name in the title…wait, was I supposed to pick just one? What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? When I deadlifted 405 LBS. My form was not the best but I felt like I actually stood a chance after that. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? Hockey, mountain biking, fishing and spending time with my kids because no matter how hard I try, I can’t slow down how fast they are growing up. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Where do I start? I guess I really like chips. Original Ruffles are probably my favorite. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I am currently writing a comedy screenplay that is a cross between Dodgeball, Kingpin, Happy Gilmore and Slapshot but has nothing to do with any of those sports. Who or what inspires you the most? Living a long and healthy life. I don’t want to be an old man with a huge gut that is super out of shape and taking 14 medications for who knows what. I want to watch and help my children navigate through the milestones of life. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? To be able to go to a public pool, take my shirt off in front of random people and feel good about it.
