Athlete of the MonthJuly
How old / young are you?
I’m 34 years old.What is your occupation?
I own and operate a local insurance brokerage, insureU Colorado.
When did you join Widespread CrossFit?
I joined the wonderful world of Widespread Crossfit in 2016.
Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try?
I started CrossFit in 2010 when my wife, Darbi, was a personal Trainer at Bally Total Fitness. I was a couple years removed from playing college soccer and I was severely lacking something that could get my competitive juices flowing and push me mentally/physically.
What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit?
I grew up playing soccer and continued playing through high school and college. I was fortunate enough to get a full-ride scholarship to Metro State where I was an All-Conference and All-Region defender. My senior season we were ranked #9 in the nation.
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Over the past year I have seen a TON of changes. I started the nutrition program with Kari and we set a plan to add some muscle mass to my stick figure frame. I put on 20+ pounds and have increased my overall strength, which has helped with recurring injuries I was continually dealing with.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Show up and do the work. Be consistent with it. Rest days and recovery are your friend. Also, if your jam comes on during a workout, don’t be afraid to dance between movements. It makes it hurt less.
What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement?
The only movement I dislike is deadlift. Deadlifts and I have a non-existent relationship and it will stay that way forever. My favorite movements are front squats and squat cleans. I’m built like a pear, so anything I can use my quads and booty during I enjoy.
What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far?
Oh gosh, I have so many great memories from being at Widespread. I think my favorite is how I met one of my best friends, Dominic. On a random hungover Saturday morning workout, we had to warm-up with a 200m piggyback carry run. While Dominic was sweating all over me, I looked back at him and said, “did we just become best friends?”.
What do you like to do outside of CrossFit?
I’m a soccer junkie. I watch Premier League soccer every weekend. Specifically, Liverpool. I also enjoy spending time with my wife and family. 2020 has taught me that no matter how busy life is, you always need to find time to be with the people you love.
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal?
New York Cheesecake frozen yogurt. Mmm…mmm. Not the kind you buy at the store. I’m talking about the one you can fill-up a giant container and the cashier looks at you with an “are you serious” look after they weigh it.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I had microdiscectomy surgery on my L4/L5 lumbar spine in 2011. I injured it deadlifting and never thought I would be able to do any sort of heavy weight training again.
Who or what inspires you the most?
My parents, 100%. They are the hardest working and most selfless people I know. I hope when I have kids I can instill in them even just half of their work ethic.
What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
My only goal is to be injury free for a full year. I would like to be able to do every workout RX, but if I can stay injury free, I know I’ll continue to improve my strength and overall performance.
