Recovering from a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been a challenging yet transformative journey, and my training at Widespread has played an essential role in my progress. While the surgery itself was daunting, the habits, strength, and resilience I’ve built at the gym have provided a solid foundation for my recovery.
One of the most significant benefits has been the discipline and consistency Widespread has instilled in me. The structure of attending workouts regularly has seamlessly translated into my dedication to physical therapy. I’ve made it a priority to perform my prescribed PT exercises twice daily without fail. This consistency is critical for improving mobility and regaining strength, and my gym routine helped reinforce that no-skip mindset.
Another vital aspect of my recovery has been the unilateral strength I developed through the Widespread workouts. Many workouts emphasize using one side of the body independently, which has allowed me to function effectively even when relying on my non-operated leg. Tasks that seemed daunting, such as lowering myself onto a chair or the toilet using a single leg, have been manageable thanks to the balance and strength I built before surgery.
CrossFit has taught me the importance of proper movement and mechanics, which has proven invaluable for executing my therapy exercises correctly. Whether it’s engaging the right muscles or maintaining good posture, these lessons have minimized the risk of injury and maximized the effectiveness of my therapy. The emphasis on form at Widespread has directly translated to ensuring that every movement I perform in recovery is purposeful and beneficial.
Lastly, CrossFit’s intense workouts have also fortified my mental toughness. Physical therapy often involves grueling and sometimes excruciating exercises to restore range of motion and strength (tears yo!). The mental resilience I’ve developed from pushing through challenging WODs has been indispensable as I tackle these demanding therapy sessions. Knowing I’ve persevered through tough situations before gives me confidence that I can handle the discomfort and challenges of recovery.
From building discipline and unilateral strength to fostering mental toughness and proper movement patterns, the benefits of my training extend far beyond the gym. This experience has shown me how essential fitness can be, not just for general health, but for overcoming significant physical challenges and coming out stronger on the other side.
You guys: Widespread has been more than just a fitness routine for me—it has been a critical partner in my recovery journey—and I cannot wait to be back. See you in the gym!
