Athlete of the MonthJune
How old / young are you? 46 What is your occupation? Ob Gyn at UC Health-Longmont Clinic and Longmont United Hospital When did you join Widespread CrossFit? January 2015 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I had been away from sports for way too long b/c of career and one week two of the most beautiful and most athletic patients I had ever seen came to see me practically back to back at the office. They were both CrossFitters. One was pregnant and made me promise to try CF before she gave birth! And the other was covered in bruises and I got super worried about her social situation before she told me about box jumps. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? Played soccer and lacrosse in high school, soccer in college, then Ultimate Frisbee for 10 years (yes this is a real thing – a club sport and I even got to play on the National Team at the World Games in Japan!). What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? Health wise – lost 20 pounds since starting CrossFit and gained back 5 to 10 of it in lean muscle mass. But more importantly, I can lift heavy shit now! It doesn’t hurt (or cause a fight) to help my husband move stuff for his home remodels. Finally, the impact on my running (kind of a casual trail runner) has been nothing short of astonishing – I knocked over 30 minutes off half marathon time, ran a 15k at just less than 8 minute miles (this is my equivalent of a 4 minute mile), and ran a half trail and half road marathon in one weekend last year. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Do it! No matter what age or size or ability it will be the absolute best thing you can do for your health inside and out. And be lucky enough to find a coach like Matt who makes you want to crush it every day but keeps you safe doing so. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? Favorite is partner WODs with strong man stuff – sleds, rope climbs – love doing these with the other fierce WSCF women. And back squats. Worst – things involving putting a barbell over my head – especially OHS – working hard to make friends with the barbell. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? After working for nothing short of 8 or so MONTHs on muscle ups with Matt – he asked me to do one and it just happened – wasn’t my first but first on demand first try. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? I love to hang out on the couch with Jim, Fiona, and Barley the dog and watch X men- with the batteries out of my pager and phone on airplane mode. And I live for watching the ocean tide in New England at anytime- especially with the same crew as above . What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Warm chocolate chips cookies and milk. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I like to sing my daughter to sleep – she is such a great little person and I feel like thats a way I can make her feel taken care of…more Godspell type music than say Pitch Perfect. Who or what inspires you the most? Other athletes and coaches in our box – whether one week or one decade into CF when I see other people putting out in the WOD it inspires me to suck it up and get it done. Oh yeah, and I really like it on days when Kari beats all the boys! What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? Practicing confidence – physically and spiritually – inside the box – and then bringing that to all aspects of my life.
