How old / young are you?

When did you join Widespread Fitness?
2019
Why did you decide to give Widespread Fitness a try?
It was recommended by some of the folks from Moov who knew Matt from their previous gym
What was your athletic background before starting?
Varsity tennis in high school. Did nothing in my 20’s, gained a ton of weight. Weightlifting 29+, lost all of
the weight but broke my back. 34+, after back surgery, switched to triathlon
and light weightlifting. Around 39, I got crushed (not literally) in my first Spartan Race by the 100 lb Atlas
Stone obstacle. Chelsea was doing Crossfit and breezed through the race. So I decided to join her.
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting?
General health has improved. Pure weightlifting and hardcore endurance training gives you low body fat,
but you are more prone to sickness. Physique is not great comparatively. The show muscles are no
longer showing. All pants are too tight in the butt and legs. Overall performance is superior. Crossfit has
been great training for obstacle course races and the apocalypse. I can
lift awkward objects, carry heavy loads, trek long distances, climb ropes and over walls, traverse monkey
bars and rings. The only skills missing in Crossfit are javelin throwing for Spartan Races and axe
throwing for the zombies. We run a Spartan Race annually as a general
fitness test, and the javelin throw is the only failed obstacle.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting?
Modify the weight and movement as needed. Improvement in the skill is worth more than increasing the
weight. Have short and long term goals. Do the workouts that you hate the most
What is your favorite and least favorite exercises / movement?
My favorites are olympic lifts and anything that I can kip. My least favorite is thrusters due to the combo
of bad/weak knees and shoulders.
What is your most memorable moment so far?
When Chelsea beat me in the head-to-head by a couple seconds.
What do you like to do outside of the gym?
Camping, reading, video games
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal?
I love ice cream but it does not love me back
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I used to weigh 205 lbs
Who or what inspires you the most?
I have always taken inspiration from folks older and fitter than me. I want to be able to do what they are
doing at their age.
What is one goal you would like to accomplish?
Ring Muscle in a workout
