How old / young are you?
I am 28.
What is your occupation?
I work at an oil and gas service company where I train our technicians on how to maintain and repair our equipment, among other things.
When did you join Widespread Fitness?
December of 2023.
Why did you decide to give Widespread Fitness a try?
I occasionally walked by on my way to the nail salon next door on random Saturday mornings and noticed how fun and intense the classes seemed. There was always lots of yelling yet people in classes seemed not to mind it. Finally, I reached out a few months before my wedding and decided to give it a try. I wasn’t working out very consistently at that point and was doing pretty much no cardio, so I figured CrossFit-style workouts where you pay money for an instructor to scream at you and make you do hard stuff might do me some good.
What was your athletic background before starting?
I played volleyball in high school and then for fun after that. In high school, a weights class was required for varsity, so I took one and fell in love with lifting heavy sh*t. Throughout and after college, I primarily lifted weights and dabbled in powerlifting and bodybuilding style workouts.
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting?
My cardiovascular endurance has definitely improved and I feel a lot stronger. I’m currently 5ish months pregnant, so a small wrench has been thrown in the physique changes and performance departments. I think the mental changes have been the most drastic though. Catching the 5pm class most days is something I look forward to and can’t imagine missing. Nothing feels better than getting through a tough workout and then repeating them a few months later and seeing how much you’ve improved.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting?
Start with baby steps in mind, and then don’t stop. Everything is scalable and will only help you improve as long as you consistently put in the effort. Keep showing up, and naturally, the hard stuff will seem less intimidating while becoming more appealing.
What is your favorite and least favorite exercises / movement?
The power snatch is so fun. It still seems wild to me that a person can hold a barbell so awkwardly yet thrust and catch that much weight overhead.
Fact: Burpees are the absolute worst.
What is your most memorable moment so far?
Participating in my first head-to-head of this past spring’s CrossFit games. I remember wanting to puke because burpees are terrible and should only be used by the CIA as a means of torturing the enemy. I’m just glad I didn’t ralph in the chalk bucket with that many people watching.
What do you like to do outside of the gym?
Hang with friends and family, pretend like I know how to make various breads, hike or camp as long as sitting in traffic isn’t part of it
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal?
Anything chocolate does the trick.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I can speak a decent amount of Spanish. (Or at least I used to be able to.)
Who or what inspires you the most?
Everyday normal folks who do badass athletic things all while balancing work and family and fun. It’s always so motivating talking to anybody who can do it all and do it so gracefully. I want to be like that when I grow up.
What is one goal you would like to accomplish?
Keep working out consistently till this baby is outta me.
