Athlete of the MonthJuly
How old / young are you? Im 45.
What is your occupation? I work as an IT Architect in the Financial Industry.
When did you join Widespread CrossFit? In June of 2018
Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? In searching for a way to get in shape I looked at several places – Gym membership, Martial Arts, Sports team. In researching I was fascinated with the CrossFit founders vision of CrossFit. I hate repetitive activities and the constant switch in format and focus of CrossFit was perfect. Finding Widespread was great, close to home and Matt and Kari were very welcoming.
What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? Zero. I have a very sedentary job and was never good at scholastic sports. In all honesty the less I did the less I felt like doing. I knew a big reason I always felt rough was due to the lack of exercise.
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? The changes I have seen have been incredible. Initially a boost in energy made wanting to go to each session easier. After a year, I am in the best shape of my life. I just completed my yearly physical and my doctor was thrilled with the changes. I have lost 35lbs since starting and 4 pant sizes. My lower back no longer aches constantly. With supervision I have been able to stop 2 prescriptions and reduce 2 more. It feels good to fit into my clothes and just feel more comfortable.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Do it sooner. Use a personal trainer up front. Don’t worry about keeping up or what you accomplish, the largest hurdle is just getting into the routine of doing it. Do CrossFit to make it a habit. If you push to hard or make to many changes up front it will become a chore. The goal is to make it a lifelong habit.
What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? Burpee/Burpee – From day one its the movement that has been the most frustrating and yet its the one I want the hardest to perfect.
What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? A few weeks ago I was able to run the 400M without pausing and at a time I was happy with. That’s a milestone as jogging has been challenging. I know it’s a small victory but those incremental improvements and “PRs” are what make CrossFit enjoyable.
What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? My wife and I are sugar glider rescuers. We spend a ton of time working with our little rescues. We currently run the largest rescue in Colorado with 56 Sugar Gliders in our care.
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Steak, grass fed and thick, cooked on the grill, grilled asparagus with Parmesan and grilled potatoes.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you? A few years ago I was trained and certified as a Swiss Banker. The reason behind doing this was complicated but it led to some remarkable experiences.
Who or what inspires you the most? My wife. Lynne has fought through a very painful frustrating chronic illness, breast cancer and more than one Doctor giving her the “you only have so long to live” speech. She has defied every one and is a true survivor. Even though I know it must bore her, she always asks about my day at work, my CrossFit workout and is constantly supportive of my efforts to get in shape. She not only inspires me but gives me the goaline to shoot for.
What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? It seems a little out of reach yet but I would like to try a Spartan Race or similar.
