Athlete of the MonthMay
How old / young are you? 41 What is your occupation? Consulting w/ Accenture Strategy in the Communications, Media, and Technology Industry When did you join Widespread CrossFit? January 2019 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? My wife had my boys registered in a few CrossFit classes at Widespread. I was really impressed with the progress my kids made and the impact it had on their rock-climbing performance. I decided to jump in and give it a shot. I have never done this before and was concerned about my back and how I could do it. So far so good. After a month or so, I saw a big impact in strength and performance in cycling and snowboarding. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? Growing up I played football, baseball, and wrestling. I enjoy outdoor cycling these days. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? The change has been pretty big for me. I have lost nearly 30 pounds. Generally, I feel better, sleep better, more energetic, and experience less back pain. I am amazed how fast my body has adapted. I also completely changed my relationship with food and that has also had a big impact. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Everyone is on their own path. Do your best and stay humble. Just jump in and give it a shot. First few classes are challenging especially if you have never done this before. Your body will adapt and the impact will be positive. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? I generally struggle with burpees, lunges, sled pushes, single/double unders. Mostly due to back discomfort. I enjoy weightlifting exercises the most. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? So many memorable moments stand out. Making it through a few work outs when I thought for sure I was going to puke, landing my first double under, crossing 200s on a few weightlifting exercises, and PRs. I also enjoy traveling to national parks during the summer, hanging out with the family, and winter ski trips. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Can we consider La Croix’s a meal? I mean they have so many flavors. Key lime is my fav. I could totally dominate homemade pizza any day of the week. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? Nothing really earth shattering to be surprised about here: I have traveled to 45 states, lived in Germany and Saudi Arabia during my days in the Air Force, and was the first to graduate with a college degree in my family. Graduated from CU with BS/MS. Who or what inspires you the most? My wife who is very supportive and everyone who wakes up at 4am to make a 5am CrossFit class.
