Athlete of the MonthDecember
How old / young are you? 45 What is your occupation? I’m a RN. Every few years I change it up (beauty of nursing) but always come back to ICU. My favorite place to work has been the Neuro Trauma ICU back home (we saw all the crazy stories and mike says I complained all the time about it) but since moving to Colorado my main job is at Good Samaritan Hospital, I am thankful for my job there. When did you join Widespread CrossFit? My first On Ramp class was Feb 1, 2019. Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I was sitting around feeling sorry for myself pissed off because I didn’t want to go fight the crowds at the local rec center. Mike never wanted to go work out with me and go to my “silly little classes”. My cousin who had been doing CrossFit for a couple of years was seeing great gains both in her physical and mental health so I looked up gyms and emailed Matt. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? I am not very “athletic” but I have always tried to be active. Moving to the healthiest state in America was not so healthy for Mike and I although we are getting it together and working on it! What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? I have lost around 20+lbs since starting CrossFit. I am starting to see some little muscles, I am wanting to do more and really miss it when I don’t make it in for a couple of days. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Just do it and just show up. Find a good coach and just let them do what they do. Try to stay out of your head and also don’t worry about what anybody else does. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? I honestly don’t have a favorite and still don’t feel like I’m great at it but I do like most of the workouts and love that it’s different every day, I don’t have to worry about what to do when I show up… just do it, and I love that many of them are only a “few minutes” lol. My least favorite is sled pushes…. Those I could just do without and it is because that noise hurts my teeth. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? I am really happy to get rid of the “stress weight” I had gained. Really just being a part of it and having something to look forward to. I love it and when I try to tell people that don’t understand they just act like I’m going to get hurt doing it. So I find myself trying to convince everyone I see to try it. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? Anything that doesn’t involve a lot of people… Hiking, I been working on snowboarding for 6 years (big eye roll), being 60-80 foot under water is the most peaceful place there is! But since coming to Colorado that is hard to get to… I really liked riding my bike maybe I will try to get into mountain/trail biking next summer. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Probably the biggest thing I have cut out is drinking… margaritas, beer… Nachos, Tacos, Southwest Eggrolls, Wings… I am also probably one of the few people in Colorado that can still make homemade biscuits and whatever else you would eat with those. You can take the girl out of the south but…. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I married the love of my life at 19 and to this day there is no one else I’d rather hang out with (lucky him lol). A little over 6 years ago we sold almost everything, quit good jobs, left everything we knew and moved 6 states away with 3 teen/tweens, a dog and cat in tow a month into the new school year. Oh it was the week Boulder flooded and there was little to no housing… it was pretty stupid! I am surprised we are still here and whether that was the worst mistake or best decision of our lives is still to be determined. Who or what inspires you the most? The one thing my job gives me is perspective… if I ever forget it, I am reminded of it pretty quickly. I am mostly inspired by everyday people placed in unimaginable circumstances. Some of these total strangers I will never forget and often wonder how they or their families are doing. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? My main goal is to just try to keep in the best mental and physical shape I can. Life and work can just get stressful and everything is better when you just take care of yourself. I just want to be able to keep doing the things in the outdoors I like to do and to be able to keep up with the kids. I don’t want my health to be the determining factor in what work I can do. I will be happy to someday be able to do real pushups, run/bike a respectable speed, not freak out doing a box jump and just maybe someday get a pullup although I am not so sure that one will ever happen.
