Athlete of the MonthApril
How old/young are you? I’m 48…wondering, does that make me the oldest person in the gym? What is your occupation? I’m in IT Infrastructure, currently working for an investment firm. When did you join Widespread CrossFit? Matt and Kari said it was 3 ½ years, I think I’ve blocked it out. I did “quit” for awhile but somehow Crossfit is like the mafia and it pulled me back in. Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? Several of my friends were doing CrossFit and following the first rule of CrossFit “always talk about CrossFit”. (Did I use the word CrossFit enough there?) And, they loved it, looked great, and had energy. I figured it was worth a try. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? I had very little. I avoided group sports like the plague even in high school. It always made me self-conscious. I had been going to the gym and doing basic cardio and weight machines for a few years. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? I think I’m stronger than when I started. I’m more confident about putting weight over my head, which really freaked me out and I can lift more weight than before. I feel a little more confident in what my body can do. Recently I was bouncing my 6 week old granddaughter for 2 hours and thought “OH so this is what CrossFit has been preparing me for!” lol. But that’s really it for me, I just want to feel secure in doing day to day things and keep improving. Oh, and occasionally I can feel a little muscle tone which is nice. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? I think for me it’s about finding the right place. The friends I mentioned attend a large gym down south and I just can’t imagine that working for me. Here you tend to know most everyone and, really importantly, I think our coaches pay close attention so that no one gets hurt. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercise movement? Least favorite equals running and burpees!! Favorite is any chance to lift weights, particularly with my lower body so squats and deadlifts. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? Every time I complete a work out, I leave feeling a little proud of myself. I’ve gotten into the habit of texting of my daughter or boyfriend each time and saying “CrossFit didn’t kill me again” or “I survived” so each class I think is a memorable moment for me! What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? I like spending time with my kids and now my new granddaughter. I like home décor, gardening, and traveling when I can. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal”? Well nutrition is definitely my weak spot but if I could have any meal it would be a smothered breakfast burrito with a side of chips and salsa. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? One of my daughters and I won a car on The Price is Right a few years ago. Who or what inspires you the most? My kids. They’ve grown into amazing adults but since they’ve been born, they give me strength. For them, I could do most anything. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? Some day I would like to do an actual pull up or a headstand on the wall.
