How old / young are you? 46 years old What is your occupation? I am currently a Special Education teacher at Mountain Range High School. I have taught students with emotional disabilities for over 10 years, but the past 3 years has been dedicated to teaching reluctant readers. The struggle is real. When did you join Widespread CrossFit? I joined CrossFit 5 years ago, when Widespread opened. Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? My wife, Sarah, convinced me to give it a try. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? Played high school sports and used to bike and climb a lot in my twenties. The gym, for exercise, used to always be the last option for me. Running can be monotonous, but I have finished a marathon, may have one more in me. Racquetball was fun, but tough to find partners. Yoga was good brainfood (still is), but I needed something with more intensity. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? The biggest change for me is that CrossFit has given me a home with a community. It is nice to have people, who share in the misery. It has reduced my insomnia tremendously. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Biggest advice I would give someone when starting is pay attention to your form, so you do not hurt yourself. And knowing whether you have proper form really depends on listening to the awesome coaches. So listen to your coaches. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? Favorite move: Snatch Least favorite: Burpees over, under, through, around, or near anything What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? Memorable moments…I don’t know if one stands out. The fact that I am still able to obtain Weightlifting PRs in my mid-forties is cool. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? Outside of CrossFit. I love to bike, snowboard, and enjoy the Colorado outdoors on a hike or even a patio with a beverage. I love to travel. Dream is to cycle across Europe or North America one day. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Cheat meal: Chocolate with Caramel is my go to, which is absolutely necessary during my last class I teach during the day. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? What most people might not know is that I enjoy painting scenery and abstracts. Who or what inspires you the most? The person that inspires me the most, and I know this sounds corny is my wife Sarah. She is the reason I keep heading to the gym. She is determined and consistent and keeps an amazing attitude even in hard times. A woman who could not do a pull-up finishes Murph after five years of trying–impressive. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? A goal for CrossFit. Short term is I want my shoulder to heal, so I can do overhead movements again. Long term, I simply want to stay in shape and fit so I can keep up with my son as I grow older.
