Athlete of the MonthSeptember
How old / young are you? 42 What is your occupation? In-house counsel for a midstream energy company When did you join Widespread Fitness? February 2022 Why did you decide to give Widespread Fitness a try? I have lifted fairly consistently since college, but at age 41, I had really seen my efforts plateau. I wanted to see if a change in mindset and workout regimen would get me past that plateau. It certainly has. What was your athletic background before starting? I played college baseball for a few years before injuries forced me to retire. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting? I have a butt for the first time in my life! What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting? After doing the onboarding class, just dive in. The truth is that we are all continuously learning new exercises, form adjustments, etc. It won’t ever be perfect, so just start moving and let the process play out. What is your favorite and least favorite exercises / movement? This will come as no surprise, but floor press is my favorite. My least favorite is back squats because I can’t do them due to injury and Matt makes me do Zercher squats instead … those are terrible. What is your most memorable moment so far? I had a really rough workout a month ago – September 2nd to be exact. It was power cleans and running (look it up), and I barely finished. An hour after the workout, another member from the gym texted me to see how I was doing. That meant a lot and is emblematic of what this community offers. What do you like to do outside of the gym? I collect vinyl records, am a sci-fi/fantasy nerd, and have recently re-started playing guitar. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Anything Cajun/Creole. I lived in New Orleans for over a decade and miss the beignets, crawfish, etc. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I once went on tour with Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age. Who or what inspires you the most? Without a doubt, my wife Naomi inspires me the most. She gets up with me and works out at 5 a.m. – harder than I do – every single day. On those mornings when I wake up and want to cancel instead of doing burpees, her dedication gets me out the door to the gym. What is one goal you would like to accomplish? Be able to Rx the workouts more consistently.
