Athlete of the MonthJanuary
How old / young are you? 41 What is your occupation? I do product marketing for a tech company. When did you join Widespread CrossFit? I’ve been doing CrossFIt for 3.5 years. I joined WSCF in June 2016 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I like all the T-shirts you get for showing up, just kidding. I always liked watching the games on TV and thought it looked fun. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? I’ve played soccer since I was 5. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? I’m way stronger than I’ve ever been. I’m able to move more weight than I could in my 20s and just every day life tasks like carrying things up the stairs, chasing down my kids, etc. are a lot easier and don’t end up with me winded. And bonus…my wife likes my ass!! What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Leave your ego at the door. The only person you really compete against is yourself. If your focus is to better the next person and not better yourself, that’s when you get hurt. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? My favorite are double unders and box jumps. I think it’s because double unders took me forever to get, or maybe I’m just demented. My least favorite movements are thrusters and wall balls. I don’t know why these kick my ass so bad. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? I actually have 2. In my first ever competition, I did a 3-rep DL of 315lbs. Prior to that I had never DL’d more than 275lbs for 1 rep. The 2nd was in the 2015 open. One of the workouts was ring muscle ups and wall balls. I had never done a ring muscle up before and I not only got my first, but 8 more after that. In both cases it wasn’t just the accomplishment, but the shared elation all my WOD buddies and teammates had with me. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? Anything outdoors…skiing, mountain biking, camping, etc…or doing some kind of home improvement project. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Thai fried rice…mmmm What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I used to be a musician. Who or what inspires you the most? My wife. She is the most amazing, genuine person I’ve ever known, and I’m constantly in awe of her. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? My goals are simple: keep getting faster and stronger…and beat Hope…mostly just beat Hope.
