Athlete of the MonthMarch
How old / young are you? 39 What is your occupation? Project Superintendent at Haselden Construction When did you join Widespread CrossFit? September 2015 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I had tried going to the rec center, but struggled with self motivation and didn’t really enjoy working out by myself. Work was very stressful at the time and I needed a way to cope with the stress. Wendy came across CrossFit and we decided to try a trial membership and started our fitness journey together. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? I was not very active. Played the occasional hockey or softball game, but hated running and couldn’t find a routine in the gym. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? Leading an overall healthy lifestyle has been the biggest thing. Cutting out the really bad food and introducing the intense exercise allowed me to shed fat and build muscle. My mobility has increased a lot as well. 3 years ago I couldn’t do pull up or sit in a squat. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Give it a try and don’t be intimidated by your limits right away. Don’t worry about what other people are doing, worry about competing with yourself, doing the best you can do. It takes a lot of time to build up strength and stamina. Continue to push yourself. You WILL be often humbled by your limits, but pushing yourself past the comfort zone will change those limits, this is when you see positive results. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? I enjoy doing barbell work, and wallballs, but cringe at the running. I would actually rather do burpees than run long distance. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? Any of the competitions I have participated in. It’s amazing the amount of energy at those. People yelling, screaming, and cheering everyone on. It’s almost as if you get a burst of energy to push through whatever you may be doing, almost finding another gear. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? Hang out with family and friends, 4-Wheeling, hiking, softball, hunting, projects at home, whatever there is to do to stay active. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Pizza, have to have pizza once week, and big fat burgers….maybe a few beers, or cocktails…then Girl Scout cookie season comes around…. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? We did a 5 day backpacking trip to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back a few years ago. What a BEAUTIFUL place!! Who or what inspires you the most? First and foremost, my wife Wendy. She does a great job of juggling a full time job and managing the kids and I so we all have time to do what we need to do and have what we need to stay happy, healthy, and active. Secondly, anyone and everyone that takes themselves to Widespread on a regular basis to make themselves better people. I love working out with everyone, the WSCF “family” is another reason that keeps me coming in day in and day out. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? BUTTERFLY PULL-UPS…..they look so effortless! If I can do Butterflies, would I be able to do pull ups all day long!
