Athlete of the MonthSeptember
How old / young are you? 30 years old What is your occupation? Warehouse Supervisor for Medline Industries, Inc. When did you join Widespread CrossFit? June 1, 2015 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I had been interested in it for a while but last June, there was an opportunity to try it out through the CASF (Colorado Adaptive Sports Foundation). I’ve been at it ever since. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? Adaptively, I’ve done mono-skiing, sled hockey, hand cycling, and lacrosse that I can think of. Prior to my injury however, I did it all. I played football, ice hockey, and ran track all through high school. I also play baseball, golf, and pretty much any other sport you can think of recreationally. I’m a sports nut!! What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? Given that I really only use my arms while doing CrossFit, I have definitely seen a change in the definition of my shoulders, traps, and just arms in general. I have also notice that my endurance and strength have both increased ten-fold since I first started. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Give it a shot. It’s going to be easy, in fact it will be very difficult at first, but if you stick with it, the results you’re looking for will come!! What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? My least favorite is by far and away back extensions. My favorite would be either pull ups or bench press. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? Participating in the Open, specifically the night I competed against Jason. I gave it everything I had and still lost, but the adrenaline and the cheers from everyone got me through it. Mostly though, it was the feeling of true competition. Having everyone there to cheer me on and motivate me to be better than I think is possible gives me a feeling that can’t be described. That feeling is one of the reasons that I love sports so much!! What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? I work a lot but I also enjoy traveling, anything related to sports, going to concerts at any venue but especially Red Rocks, movies, and going out with friends to grab a few (or sometimes a lot) of drinks!! What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Dependent on the weather either ice cream or just candy in general. I have a terrible sweet tooth!! What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I don’t eat cheese, with the exception of meat pizza. Who or what inspires you the most? People living with injuries worse off than me. Brain injuries, strokes, higher level spinal cord injuries, etc. If they can get up every morning, not being able to do anything independently, I sure as hell better make the most out of the ability that I still do have!! Also, as corny as it sounds, my family. They have been there for me through everything without even blinking and without their love and support, there is no way that I’d be living in Denver, doing CrossFit, and living the life I am. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit I want to complete at least a sprint triathlon.
