Athlete of the MonthFebruary
How old / young are you? 39 years old What is your occupation? Family Nurse Practitioner at The Little Clinic When did you join Widespread CrossFit? July/August 2015 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I was living in Canon City looking for a gym to join. It was time to get myself back into shape. My roommate at the time decided to try Crossfit. She loved it and talked me into trying it. I was only at that gym 3 months and absolutely loved my experience. When I moved back to Denver, one of my top priorities was finding a Crossfit gym I felt comfortable in. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? The last couple years, I worked out on occasion – road bike, jogging, hiking, skiing, a couple triathlons. Nothing consistent though. I was good at working out for two weeks, then nothing for months. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? The changes have been amazing. After participating in the nutrition challenge, I lost 20 pounds and have managed to keep the weight off. I have not been at this weight in 3 years. I feel I am the healthiest I have been in a long time. Performance has improved. I am able to lift heavier weight. I can now run a 5K in a reasonable amount of time. I believe my first 5K took me 45 min. Now I can run one in 33 minutes. I am looking forward to continued improvement over the next 6 months. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? I would encourage anyone wanting to try Crossfit, to do it. They don’t have to worry about being judged by others. No need to compare themselves with anyone else. Everyone is supportive. It truly is a community. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? My absolute least favorite movement is the overhead squat. I find this movement very difficult. My favorite exercise is sit ups any which way. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? My most memorable moment so far was finally linking 8 double unders. I definitely need a lot more practice, but I was happy to be able to do it once so far. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? I enjoy most things outdoors-skiing, camping, hiking with my dog. I enjoy concerts (especially Country music), travel, wine tasting 🙂 What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? PIZZA. I don’t know why I love pizza so much. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I am a scuba diver. I absolutely love open water. I have been certified 16 years now. I have over one hundred dives under my belt. Once a year I pick a new country to visit for diving. Who or what inspires you the most? My grandparents have inspired me through life. They had strong family values and morals, a strong foundation. They were married over 50 years. I have always aspired to live my life as they lived theirs. What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? My main goal from the beginning has been to achieve a healthy weight, maintain that weight as well as maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise and diet. One small goal for this year is to be able to do a strict pull up 🙂
