How old / young are you?
I am 53.
What is your occupation?
I am an engineering consultant and work in the pharmaceutical industry. My current project is working on a new manufacturing facility being built outside of Indianapolis.
When did you join Widespread Fitness?
I joined in August 2022.
Why did you decide to give Widespread Fitness a try?
A friend of mine is a member and told me about it. I stopped by the gym to find out more and it happened to be during a 9 AM class so I was going to come back later, but Matt came out to meet me and it looked like something I wanted to try, and I liked the small class size. I’ve tried to stay in shape on my own but have always had better results when I’ve done class workouts and get encouraged by the coaches.
What was your athletic background before starting?
I’ve always liked working out and have done a lot of running/hiking and some weight training and I used to do TRX and Orange Theory Fitness. I like to play tennis, ski and used to play in an adult ice hockey league.
I’ve done the Pikes Peak Ascent (13.3 mile race) 3 years in a row (a long time ago!). My all time favorite has been the 17.1 mile Imogene Pass Run which starts in Ouray and ends in Telluride.
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting?
Without a doubt, the biggest change I’ve seen is a big improvement in overall strength and muscle tone. I’ve gotten the best results from CrossFit over any other fitness activity I’ve done.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting?
Don’t be intimidated by some of the technical movements and stick with it. The workouts can be very tough, but they all can be tailored to your ability and the coaches are excellent at working with you. You will see results if you stick with it.
What is your favorite and least favorite exercises / movement?
I like the dead lift because I’ve gotten pretty good at it. My least favorite are double unders, I just haven’t gotten the rhythm down yet.
What is your most memorable moment so far?
I can’t remember the name of the workout, but there was one class in which Matt put up a video of an older granny killing it on this workout. He challenged everyone to beat her time- most did not, including myself.
What do you like to do outside of the gym?
I like to spend time with my wife and teenage kids, travelling and skiing with them. I also really enjoy watching my kids compete in their sports (son- hockey, daughter- gymnastics and track)
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal?
In-n-Out Double Double
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
My parents were born in Poland and Polish was my first language (I was born in Michigan)
Who or what inspires you the most?
My kids, I love being able to go out and ski, hike and play tennis with them and (mostly) keep up with them!
What is one goal you would like to accomplish?
I know exercise alone won’t get me into the shape I want to be in, especially as I get older. I really want to focus on having a consistently better diet. I want to be fit, and not just fit for my age.
