Athlete of the MonthFebruary
How old / young are you? I will be 60 years young in April. What is your occupation? I am retired from the corporate business world having held positions in energy (solar and wind programs—development and product management), and most recently I owned/operated The Exchange Tavern. When did you join Widespread CrossFit? About three years ago. Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? Thea Wessel is my daughter and she loved it so much, she got me interested in trying it. Matt was so great in the prep sessions—I felt I could give it a go. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? I have done various things as an adult to stay fit—but wouldn’t have called myself an athlete previously. I ran for years, then moved to classes of one form or another, including Orange Theory. What I learned is that I’m not particularly self-motivated, so a class or group approach is better for me. What changes to your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? The changes have been gradual but profound. I’m definitely stronger. I see the benefits of sit-ups, cardio, balance improvements—and while I’m often sore from the movements, I don’t hurt otherwise. Before CrossFit, joints were starting to ache and diminished strength was becoming noticeable. Now I feel confident and strong all the way around. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? My favorite is definitely ring-rows. Least favorite? I would have said burpees earlier (still don’t enjoy them), but what is least favorite is anything where we have to count reps because invariably I will lose count! Though Kari never minds when I end up doing more than I needed to. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? Well the most memorable is the most recent. I was working up to a three rep back squat max. My previous one rep max was 105. I ended up doing three at 125–and the best part was I felt like I could have done more. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? I like to do yoga every morning, and enjoy hiking, as well as walking my dog at least two miles most days. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Anything with sugar. Working on breaking that propensity though. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I dig heavy metal and see Nine Inch Nails whenever they are in town. Who or what inspires you the most? From a fitness perspective, I honestly can say how much I appreciate that Matt and Kari actually live the healthy lifestyle they espouse. It is inspiring and motivating! What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? SOMEDAY I would like to be able to do at least one true pull up. More realistically, I would just like to continue getting stronger even as I am aging up.
