Athlete of the MonthJanuary
How old / young are you? 54 years old
What is your occupation? CEO – PDSINC, LLC
When did you join Widespread CrossFit? November – 2015 – 50 months ago
Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? My body hurt from inactivity. My ankles hurt, my knees hurt. I was 30 pounds over weight, played golf, drank beer, smoked cigars and sat on the couch watching sports. My energy was low. I watched Allison and the kids out doing things and I was always too tired to join them. I was turning 50 and felt like I was missing out on life.
What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? In high school: Quarterback of the football team, all state short stop – baseball, all state basketball player, golf, tennis and track. College golf. And yes, I dated the homecoming queen …….
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? I lost 30 pounds in four months. I dropped from a 42 waist in my pants to a 37. I have put weight back on but it is healthy weight and I still am in a 37 waist pant.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? Be true to your own goals. My number 1 goal at my age is to get my heart rate up 4 to 5 times a week. I don’t look at the whiteboard. If I am exhausted at the end of the work out, I finish number 1 on my whiteboard.
What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? Favorite is rowing, wall balls and kettle bell swings. Least favorite – all other movements.
What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? Kari yelling at me for being late to class
What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? Golf, Family, hiking and strangely enough – I love to work.
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Once you are 50+, everything is considered “cheat” food.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you? Matt and Kari have asked me to be CrossFit athlete of the month every month since I joined. Congrats to the 49 winners prior to my finally accepting in my 50th month of CrossFit. I score off the charts as an introvert.
Who or what inspires you the most? My dad. He had 7 children. Worked his ass off and never complained. He passed away 2 years ago. The memory of him still inspires me.
What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? Get to 60, then 70, then 80, then 90 years old – healthy and active.
