Athlete of the MonthJune
How old / young are you? 40 What is your occupation? I’m the Assistant Controller at Clovis Oncology (accountant) When did you join Widespread CrossFit? August 2015 Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try? I wanted to get back into shape after my second pregnancy and one of my goals was to backpack the Grand Canyon (down to the river and back). We had been to the rim a couple of years prior and there was one woman on her way up that was miserable and was not shy about telling anyone how horrible it was – so I had to try it out for myself! To get ready for the trip I did some at home workouts (lots of lunges) and hikes with a weighted backpack. The trip was a success and I decided when we got back that I needed something more challenging than an at home routine, so I signed up for CrossFit and haven’t looked back. What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit? I’ve always enjoyed being active – volleyball, running, spinning, biking, snowboarding and hiking. What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit? Increase in strength and endurance as well as healthier eating habits What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? The quickest way to build/acquire self confidence is to do something you’re afraid to do. What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement? My favorite movements are anything with weights (excluding thrusters), rowing and core. My least favorite – thrusters and sled pushes. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far? In my first couple months of CrossFit I remember the group complaining about this horrible WOD and the coach assured us that no one was dying in the next 10 minutes. I remember laughing, but it was a good perspective and not just for the workout…no dying = you’re ok. Be thankful for each day. What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? I’m an Uber driver…except I don’t get paid because my kids are broke. I also enjoy photography, hiking, gardening, biking, volunteering at school, coaching the kids’ teams and hanging out with friends and family. What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? I prefer to drink my cheat meals – raspberry sour beer, cider or jalapeño margaritas are my favorite! What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I believe quite a few people know I enjoy adding 14ers to my list of accomplishments. I’ve summited 14 to date. I’d love to up my game and hike the Colorado Trail, but there are lots of athlete_bio to . figure out. First detail – how do I get my boss to give me a month and a half off? Second detail – how do I talk Nate into going along? Who or what inspires you the most? I’m around a lot of inspiring people every day that push me to be the best me (family and friends included), but I have to say that when I’m really feeling in a funk what gets me out of it is remembering my sister’s battle with breast cancer and how tough she was and still is. That generally gets me to stop my whining! What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? Someday I’ll master double-unders…. I was so close before I broke my ankle!
