Product manager with Cleerly. Cleerly is a med tech company that applies machine learning algorithms to coronary CT scans to assess coronary artery disease in a non-invasive way. When did you join Widespread CrossFit?
November 2024
Why did you decide to give CrossFit a try?
We moved back to the area after a temporary stint in FL, and I was looking for a gym to get me out of the house (I work remotely) and meet new people. The gym is just a few blocks from home, so it seemed like the obvious choice even though I was intimidated by CrossFit.
What was your athletic background before starting CrossFit?
Mostly endurance activities (long-distance cycling, hiking, cross country many moons ago) with some basic weight lifting. I loved Peloton and all of the classes it offered, but I was missing some shared suffering and type 2 fun.
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
So much! I’ve lost weight, gained muscle and strength, and I’ve done things and lifted weights I never ever imagined. I’ve gained a ton of confidence thanks to the coaches and other athletes in the gym. While I’m never going to be the strongest or fastest and I scale everything to some degree, I’m pretty proud of my PRs and feel like a beast with some of the power lifts.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Widespread offers such a welcoming and supportive environment; there’s no reason not to jump in head first (as long as you’re willing to work through the initial soreness ). There is a scale option for everything, and the coaches are there to make sure you are getting a great workout that is appropriate and safe for your fitness and skill level. Plus we have a lot of fun along the way, especially the 5 PM-ers!
What is your favorite and least favorite CrossFit exercises / movement?
Favorite: Power cleans, sumo deadlifts, floor press
Least favorite: bear crawls, burpees, front squats
What is your most memorable CrossFit moment so far?
The CrossFit Open this year and all of the spirit the blue team brought, including inflatable dinosaur riders serving blue jello shots! Nothing says CrossFit like jello shots, right??
What do you like to do outside of CrossFit?
Hiking, traveling, reading
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal?
Ice cream
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m a big fan of professional cycling. I love how it’s both an individual and team sport that involves a lot of strategy. I follow the grand tours every year and would love to go to the Tour de France someday.
Who or what inspires you the most?
My fellow Widespread athletes who always show up, push themselves, and are willing to try something new (sometimes). We climbed the Manitou incline last fall, ran a 5k this spring, and have gone on some great hikes and training runs. I don’t know that I would’ve done some of those things without my Widespread crew, and it would’ve been a whole lot harder without the training and fitness I’ve gained since joining the gym.
What is one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
An unassisted pull-up (it’s been fun to drop bands over time and see progress)
