How old / young are you? 59 years young!
What is your occupation? I have worked in management in the tech world for the last 20 years, but was laid off a year ago. After enjoying some me-time, I am on the hunt for my next adventure.
When did you join Widespread Fitness? I joined about four years ago, just as we were coming out of the pandemic.
Why did you decide to give Widespread Fitness a try? My office had a CrossFit gym on-site, but I was too intimidated to try it. Then the pandemic hit, bringing remote work, isolation, and inactivity. I needed to shake things up and found Widespread. The onboarding with Matt gave me the confidence to keep going.
What was your athletic background before starting? I’ve dabbled in different athletic endeavors: playing softball and tennis as a kid; skiing, orienteering, and hiking; a couple of mini-triathlons and a half-marathon. I joined a women’s beginner lacrosse team in my 40’s.
What changes in your health, physique, and overall performance have you seen since starting? So many changes! I’ve lost about 18 lbs and increased my strength and stamina significantly. I can see muscles and definition! I feel strong, agile, and confident.
What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting? Truly, if I can do it, anyone can! Everything can be scaled so you are still challenged and improving, but at your own ability level. The coaches and everyone in the classes are so encouraging and supportive.
What is your favorite and least favorite exercises / movement?
Favorite: Squats
Least Favorite: Burpees
What is your most memorable moment so far? There are so many, inside and outside of the classes! I did the Manitou Incline on my 59th birthday this year. All of the work and growth in the classes this last year made it possible.
What do you like to do outside of the gym? Hiking, camping, writing, travel, pickleball, and curling up with a good book. I love spending time with my family: two daughters in college and grad school, and my husband.
What is your favorite “cheat” food or meal? Oreos and milk. My family knows they can’t bring Oreos into the house. They are my kryptonite.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I am originally from Connecticut. My college roommate and I wanted to get off the East Coast, so we opened an atlas, closed our eyes, and pointed. We landed on Colorado and moved out one month later. Best random decision ever.
Who or what inspires you the most? My daughters. They are both so kind, talented, and resilient. They inspire me to keep pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and to live with curiosity. I want to be around as long as I can to enjoy more adventures with them!
What is one goal you would like to accomplish? One big goal is to thru-hike the Colorado trail. In the gym (and no less significant), I would like to do an unassisted pull-up. Just one.
